Benvenuti in Italia

ATTENZIONE!!! ATTENZIONE!!!

Welcome to the Rutgers University Department of Italian, a department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, serving the New Brunswick campus.

Italian has been offered at Rutgers since 1939 as a part of the course of studies of the Romance Languages Department. Just three years later, the first Italian major was awarded.

Today, our program offers a variety of courses, from the elementary to the graduate level. They include the study of Italian language, literature and culture. In fact, we are one of the few Departments of Italian in the country to offer a doctorate, the first of which was conferred in 1965.

Our graduate students may enroll in either our Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master of Arts (M.A.) or Doctoral program(Ph.D.). Our numerous undergraduate students may choose to enroll in either our major, minor, or honors programs. Students may also participate in a summer program at the University of Urbino (Italy), semester abroad, or Junior year abroad program in Florence.

The diversity of our courses is sustained by the standard of excellence of both our faculty and our graduate student body. As an example of our active scholarship, our tenured faculty edits and publishes Italian Quarterly, an internationally recognized journal which launched its first Rutgers issue in 1980; and NEMLA Italian Studies, a refereed journal publishing the procedings of the Italian section of the North East Modern Language Association.

In addition, our graduate students edit and publish, with the assistance of the faculty, La Fusta, one of the first graduate journals at Rutgers University and in the country.

With the continued support of Rutgers University and the international academic community, the Department of Italian seeks to continue its tradition of excellence well into the future.
